So you need a new Brew Pot?

Aluminum vs Stainless Brewing Pots

A perpetual debate among home brewers and on various discussion forums is the merits of aluminum vs stainless steel pots for brewing beer. This week we look at the pros and cons of each to help you make your own educated decision on your next beer brewing pot.

Aluminum Pot Pros and Cons

Aluminum pots are widely available and inexpensive because aluminum cookware is widely used for preparing foods. Inexpensive Turkey pots in the 36 quart range can be found at your local Walmart, particularly right after Thanksgiving at great prices. Aluminum pots cost considerably less than stainless steel – often half as much. Aluminum is a better conductor of heat than steel, so your pot will come to a boil faster and also cool down faster after you are done boiling.

The only major disadvantage of aluminum is that it will oxidize, so you can’t use oxygen-based or caustic cleaners such as Oxyclean. This is the major reason why professional brewing equipment is made of stainless steel and not aluminum – the stainless steel is easier to clean with caustic cleaning agents. Also, over time aluminum will get an oxide layer over it which can discolor the aluminum and give it a grey tone. This is not a cause for concern – the layer of aluminum oxide actually protects the pot, but it is not as pretty as stainless steel.

I feel it is important to address a number of myths about aluminum. First, aluminum pots are not linked to Alzheimer’s disease. A number of medical studies since the 1970’s have found zero link between Alzheimer’s and the use of aluminum. Keep in mind that every day you drink soda from aluminum cans (though most are lined) and eat food prepared in aluminum cookware – it is safe.

A second myth is that aluminum will react with acidic content of the wort and either add off flavors or eat away at your pot. This is also untrue – water has a pH of7.0, your wort has a pH of around 5.2, while spaghetti sauce can run as low as 4.6 and the most acidic diet sodas you drink run as low as 2.5. For comparison, battery acid has a pH of 1.0. Your wort is simply not acidic enough to react with your aluminum pot.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel pots are the “Cadillac” of brewing pots, with designer pots running into the many hundreds of dollars in price. They are more expensive than comparable aluminum pots, but are a favorite of serious brewers. Stainless steel will remain shiny, as the passive oxide layer is not visible – so its easy to tell when your stainless pot is truly clean.

An advantage of stainless steel is that you can use oxygenated cleaners on it, which makes it a favorite with professional brewers who need to clean large vats. You should avoid long term exposure to bleach based cleaners as these can pit your stainless steel pots and vessels.

Stainless steel is stronger than the softer aluminum metal, so it is less prone to denting and scratching for a comparable wall thickness. However, you are unlikely to outlive a well made stainless or aluminum pot in either case. Stainless has a strongly bonded oxide layer, so it is less susceptible to attack by acids, though again the acidity of wort is not a concern for either metal.

The major disadvantage of stainless steel is that it does not conduct heat as well as aluminum, which means a longer time to reach boil and also longer cooling times after the boil.

Which to Choose?

If you select a well made heavy-duty pot, large enough for a full boils that is heavy and conducts heat well, you can’t go wrong with either stainless or aluminum. I look for a heavy pot with thick walls as it will conduct heat better and also hold up well to the occasional nicks and dings. An ideal pot has a diameter approximately equal to its height. A well made aluminum or stainless steel pot will likely last a lifetime.

If you are a brewer on a budget, you can’t ignore the large price advantage of aluminum – often it costs half as much for a comparable pot. Stainless steel has a “cool factor”, but it also has a price associated with being cool. Now I personally use stainless steel, but I’ve also been brewing for 25 years and started out using a cheap kitchen pot.

The Return of Naked Elf
It’s time to put on your birthday suit because Naked Elf is back! An exercise in deconstruction and minimalism, Naked Elf has distinct roots in The Mad Elf Ale minus a few key components. With the cherries, honey, and chocolate malt out of the equation, this unfiltered strong ale displays the same pronounced yeast flavor that made Mad Elf famous as well as a touch of alcohol and some mellow malt flavors. Naked Elf recently hit the tap lines in our Tasting Room on May 29. Cases, six-packs and single bottles are also currently available in our General Store. This is an extremely limited brewery-only release, so get it while you can… because soon the Naked Elf will become bashful and go into hiding until next year!

Scratch Beer Update Learn More
We just released three new Scratch Beers in the Tasting Room on Thursday, March 27. Scratch #135 – Rye Ale is a full-flavored Amber Rye Ale hopped with a healthy dose of Chinook, Crystal, and El Dorado hops and 15% Rye added to the malt bill to impart a subtle dry, spicy finish. Scratch #137 – IPA represents further refining of our HopCyclone process. Aggressively dry-hopped with 100lbs. of equal parts Cascade, Chinook, and Citra hops, this intense IPA doesn’t pull any punches. The flavor of Scratch #138 – Belgian Style Brown Ale originates in the Abbey Ale yeast strain, which produces a distinctive dried fruit quality similar to raisins, prunes, figs, and dates. As the flavor develops, the dried fruit character endures, adding traces of caramel, toffee, chocolate, and dark rum as well as subtle spices, roasted nuts, and toasted grains. We also still have Scratch #136 – Red Ale on tap in the Tasting Room, with a limited supply of bottles coming soon to the General Store. Hurry in to try them all before they disappear! On the Scratch Beer horizon, look for a new Session IPA as well as the return of Rugged Trail, both coming to draft lines in the Tasting Room later in April.

Anthology Spring

Although it seems like we’ve been stuck in a vicious cycle of snowfall and single-digit temperatures, we at Tröegs Brewery are starting to “think spring.” We’re excited to report that we have begun distribution of our brand new Anthology Spring variety package! Beginning this year, we will offer four different Anthology variety packages to coincide with our current seasonal release. Anthology Spring features an assortment of some of our most popular brews including HopBack Amber, Tröegs Pale Ale, and DreamWeaver Wheat. Anthology Spring will also include our current seasonal release, the brand new Cultivator Helles Bock. We recently began shipment to wholesalers throughout our entire distribution footprint, so you can expect to see Anthology Spring in stores by the first week in March.

Full Moon Firkin

Our kitchen staff recently teamed up with our brewers to discuss something that’s always on our minds here at Tröegs: firkins! This meeting of the minds resulted in a veritable bucket list of ingredients that we’d like to infuse into a variety of our beers via firkin. So what better way to conduct this experimentation than with our monthly Full Moon Firkin event? Our Lead Cellar and firkin guru Tim Mayhew is working on a special Chai Tea version of HopBack Amber Ale for the next Full Moon Firkin event on Sunday, March 16. “This particular tea blend will impart hints of cardamom, ginger, anise, and allspice,” said Tim. “It should create a pumpkin-esque palate with a good amount of black pepper spiciness in the finish.” Tim also indicated that he’s in the process of steeping the HopBack with the tea blend now and the result is pretty stellar! Join us at the brewery on March 16 to sample this exotic version of HopBack. Tapping occurs at 11am when the first customer orders a pint. Subsequent tappings will take place as needed. Get here early and you could have the chance to tap the first firkin!

800-bbl Fermentation Tanks
In early October 2013, a boat carrying eight gargantuan 800-bbl fermentation tanks began its journey from Germany to Hershey, PA. About a month later, the precious cargo arrived at our brewery, and we’ve been working tirelessly to get these enormous tanks up and running. We anticipate the new fermenters to be on-line by the end of April. What does this mean, exactly? For starters, these tanks will allow us to increase our production steadily over the course of the next several years and get more beer into the hands of our thirsty customers. Although you may confuse them with huge grain silos found on a farm, these tanks hold A LOT of beer and will help us continue to meet the growing demand for popular beers such as Nugget Nectar, Mad Elf, and Perpetual IPA. The next time you visit us, take notice of the tanks peering out from the top of the brewery! Click HERE for a photo collage of our progress with the tanks over the last few months.

Also, a few returning items will receive fresh updates, including our ever-popular pork belly small plate, confit duck leg, and our hand-rolled flatbread. Of course, we’ll still offer our shared charcuterie and cheese plates as well as favorites such as the Oktoberfest giant pretzel, Mad Elf fondue and our take on a popular Canadian delicacy, poutine with hand-cut fries, duck gravy, cheese curds and jalapeño-apricot ketchup. Cultivator Helles Bock

We’re excited to kick off 2014 with a brand new seasonal beer program. As we revealed in last month’s issue of Tröegs Tales, the program is based on the cyclical nature of the four seasons. Emerging from springtime’s fertile ground, Cultivator celebrates the start of The Hop Cycle as sprawling fields of hop rhizomes climb and tether to hop bines. This spring bock delivers hints of toasted grains, fresh baked bread and delicate floral hops. Cultivator is available in 12oz. cases and 6-packs as well as 1/6 and 1/2 kegs. Additionally, we will release our new Anthology Spring variety package to coincide with the release of Cultivator. Anthology Spring features a sublime collection of your favorite Tröegs brews including HopBack Amber, Tröegs Pale Ale, DreamWeaver Wheat and, of course, Cultivator Helles Bock. We will begin shipment to wholesalers throughout our entire distribution footprint during the first week of February, so you can expect to see both Cultivator and Anthology Spring in stores by the week of February 10. Check out our Tröegs Events listings at the bottom of this issue for some great Cultivator promotions across all of our distribution markets.

Nugget Nectar
Learn More
Last month, we announced that we’d be shipping Nugget Nectar region by region to ensure the freshest beer possible for our customers. Throughout the month January, we unleashed our much-anticipated Imperial Amber Ale across all of Pennsylvania to the delight of hopheads in our home market. Folks residing outside of PA, never fear! Distribution will expand into NJ, MD and DE the first week of February, followed by OH, VA, NY and MA in mid-February. “The concept has always been to deliver that fresh hop flavor and aroma,” said John Trogner. “When it comes off the bottling line, it goes into trucks and right out to retailers.” Nugget Nectar is available in cases and six-packs of 12oz. bottles as well as 1/6 and 1/2 kegs. We are also in the process of packaging 22oz. bombers, which will be available this month. Also, Nugget Nectar is currently on draft in our Tasting Room, and bottles are available through our General Store at the brewery. Grab some while it’s fresh and prepare to pucker up!

Upcoming Beer Releases
The Troegenator is ready to awaken! After hibernating for six months in bourbon barrels, we’re excited to report that we will release Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator at the brewery on Thursday, February 6 at 11am. The barrel-aging process has transformed Troegenator into a lush Double Bock with undertones of vanilla, oak, and toasted coconut amid a warm blanket of tangy bourbon notes. Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator is packaged in 750mL cork and cage bottles and available only at the brewery through the General Store for take-out as well as our Tasting Room for on-premise consumption. The price per bottle is $17.99 and there is a two (2) bottle limit per person.

We’ve also got a variety of Scratch Beers planned for release in February! First up is a Dunkel Lager scheduled for release on Thursday, February 6. The Dunkel (German for “dark”) Lager is a traditional Bavarian style characterized by a smooth, malty flavor and deep reddish brown coloration. We will follow this up with our first-ever IPL (India Pale Lager), a relatively new hybrid beer style combining lager yeast and cold fermentation with an assertive hop bill. Tentative release date for the IPL is Thursday, February 13. Later in the month, we’ll also release an Oatmeal Stout, another variation on a Chocolate Stout, and a Rye Pale Ale. All five aforementioned Scratch Beers will be available on draft and via growler fill in our Tasting Room at the brewery only.

Band of Brewers Learn More
For last year’s inaugural Philly Beer Scene “Band of Brewers” event, our very own super group Starsan kicked out the jams and, although they did not walk away with the “Best Band” honors, Nugget Nectar did win “Best Beer” of the day. Well, this year Tröegs is back and screaming for vengeance! We’ve assembled a motley cast of miscreants to form Caustic, a metal band of epic proportions, and they’re determined to bring home the gold. This special charity concert will pit several local PA breweries against each other in a no-holds-barred, Battle of the Bands-style showdown. Participating breweries include Weyerbacher, Yards, Sly Fox, Victory, Neshaminy Creek, Philadelphia Brewing, and of course Tröegs, who will be playing for the Gift of Life Organ Donation Program in memory of Danny Glover. Band of Brewers will take place at World Café Live in Philadelphia on Sunday, March 2 beginning at 12 noon, and will also include beer from each participating brewery. New 2014 Seasonal Lineup Learn More
With the change in the calendar year come some pretty substantial alterations to our seasonal beer lineup, and we’re excited to give you a sneak peek of what’s ahead for 2014! Inspired by the cyclical nature of the four seasons, our “Hop Cycle” series celebrates the annual hop harvest. Emerging from springtime’s fertile ground, Cultivator (spring), celebrates the start of hop growing season. This spring bock delivers hints of toasted grains, fresh baked bread and delicate floral hops. Hop fans can rejoice knowing sunlight sustains the soil, allowing precious hop cones to grow and flourish. Sunshine Pils (summer) combines the snap of a Euro-style Pilsner with an assertive hop character to create a balanced, refreshing summer seasonal. With Hop Knife (fall), we recognize the meticulous, time-honored tradition of hand-harvesting hops at the peak of maturity. This harvest ale utilizes our hopback vessel and dry-hopping to release a bounty of intense hop flavor across the palate. As winter slowly creeps in, Blizzard of Hops (winter) confirms a successful harvest and the end of the hop cycle. Enjoy the fruits of our labor with this revitalizing Winter White IPA. With this change, we will also give our Anthology variety packaging an overhaul. Each Anthology package will coincide with our seasonal releases and include a sublime collection of your favorite Tröegs year-round brews.

Nugget Nectar Learn More
With Mad Elf now in full hibernation mode, it seems a fitting time to unleash our mid-winter limited release, Nugget Nectar. Hopheads will be excited to learn that we’re shipping Nugget Nectar region by region to get the freshest beer possible into the hands of our customers. We will release Nugget Nectar in our eight-county home market (along with the brewery Tasting Room and General Store) on January 6, and across Pennsylvania the week of January 20. Distribution will expand into New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware the first week of February, and then move into Ohio, Virginia, New York and Massachusetts in mid-February. With a heady collection of American hops, Nugget Nectar will rekindle your romance with the intense pucker your palate has come to expect from this bold Imperial Amber Ale. Drenched with a healthy dose of the freshest hops we’re able to source, Nugget Nectar is further intensified with additional whole flower Nugget cones added to our hopback vessel.  The result is an explosive hop experience that will deliver hopheads to nirvana!
Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator
This month we will package Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator! Initially released as Scratch #87, this barrel-aged version of our flagship Double Bock is dense, chewy, and captivating. After hibernating for six months in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, Troegenator has emerged as a lush Double Bock with undertones of vanilla, oak, and toasted coconut amid a warm blanket of tangy bourbon notes. For this initial run, we will release Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator in 750mL cork and cage bottles available at the brewery through the General Store for take-out as well as our Tasting Room for on-premise consumption. We plan to make this beer an annual limited release with availability in September and October at select beer retailers throughout our distribution footprint.
Full Moon Firkin
Our “Full Moon Firkin” series continues into 2014 with its first event scheduled to occur on Wednesday, January 15. Nugget Nectar will be available beginning at 11 a.m. Attributed to Native American folklore, the name “Wolf Moon” is derived from hungry wolf packs heard howling outside the natives’ villages during the full moon of January. In anticipation of the swarm of hopheads this Full Moon Firkin event is likely to attract, we feel it is only fitting to present one of our hoppiest beers that’s sure to leave you foaming at the mouth!

November Troegs Tales

November 1st, 2013

Troegs Tales Newsletter

Toys For Tots
Learn More
As the holiday season quickly approaches, Mad Elf isn’t the only thing on our minds here at Tröegs. We are pleased to announce our allegiance with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and its long-standing Toys For Tots program. Since 1947, Toys For Tots has been spreading holiday cheer by collecting and distributing new, unwrapped toys to be used as Christmas gifts for less fortunate children in communities around the country. To help kick off our local chapter’s 2013 campaign, we will place a donation box in our General Store on November 1. As if putting a smile on a less fortunate child’s face isn’t enough incentive for you, the first fifty (50) people who donate a new, unwrapped toy at the brewery between Friday, November 1 and Tuesday, November 5 will receive a Tröegs logo pint glass. So stop in at the brewery over the next few days to drop off your donation and you might even get a free pint glass! We will continue to collect toys for the campaign through December 14. For more information on Toys For Tots, please visit

Master of Pumpkins

In recent years, pumpkin ales have become as much of a necessity for a craft brewery’s portfolio as an IPA. After the success of last year’s Scratch #79 – Pumpkin Ale, we knew it was time to make it official. Master of Pumpkins was released on Friday, October 25 as a wave of thirsty patrons descended upon our General Store to get their hands on our new fall treat. One of the most popular questions among customers that day was, “Are you going to make this a seasonal beer?” Well, we’re happy to report that, yes, that is indeed the plan! We are already in the planning stages with Strites’ Orchard in Harrisburg to plant more neck pumpkins for us for next year’s harvest. We hope to reap enough of the odd-looking gourds to ensure the production of even more Master of Pumpkins next year, eventually making it a limited release throughout our distribution footprint. Available currently in 750mL bottles through our General Store and on draft in our Tasting Room, Master of Pumpkins conjures the spirit of autumn by combining roasted pumpkins and traditional pie spices with a French saison yeast to release a palate of vanilla, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, and honey. Taste it you will see, more is all you need!
Mad Elf Madness Continues! Learn More
Mad Elf hit the streets this year on October 14 when bottles were first released throughout our entire distribution footprint. But wait! The frenzy and excitement stirred by the Elf will continue into November as it hits draft lines in all of our current markets. Expect Mad Elf to start popping up in drinking establishments on draft as early as November 19. Just in time for holiday parties and gift-giving, we will also release special Mad Elf gift packs (which include a 22oz. bomber and chalice) and festive 101oz. collector bottles to coincide with the draft release. Our General Store also features a variety of Mad Elf merchandise including apparel and glassware as well as specialty items such as soap, ornaments, and more! Finally, don’t forget to snatch up a case of 12oz. bottles or 22oz. bombers at your local distributor or the Tröegs Brewery General Store… because once the Elf goes into hiding, you’ll have to wait until next season!

Scratch Beer Update
Learn More
We’ve got some exciting Scratch beers on the horizon for release in November, including a pair of IPAs and a Wheat Bock. One of the IPAs will be hopped exclusively with Galaxy, an Australian hop variety that has really caught on with craft brewers in recent years. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for the most up-to-date release information on our Scratch Beer Series.
We’re also gearing up for another release of Bourbon Barrel Aged Troegenator! This barrel-aged version of our flagship Double Bock is dense, chewy, and captivating. After spending six months hibernating inside bourbon barrels, The Nator is poised to emerge as a lush Double Bock with undertones of vanilla, oak, and toasted coconut amid a warm blanket of tangy bourbon notes.
Finally, fans of Scratch #83 are going to think the world is coming to an end again, because we’re bringing back the apocalypse! You may remember ¿Impending Descent?, our colossal, palate-numbing Russian Imperial Stout and the havoc it wreaked on all who imbibed it. Originally release to coincide with the end of the Mayan calendar, you can now experience doomsday all over again when this juggernaut of a beer returns in the near future. Release date is looming.
Troegenator and Sunshine Pils Win at GABF Learn More
We are pleased to announce that on Saturday, October 12, Tröegs Brewery won two medals at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival. Our flagship Troegenator Double Bock took home a Gold Medal in the Bock category, and our summer seasonal Sunshine Pils was awarded a Bronze medal in the German-style Pilsner category. Troegenator is the most decorated beer in our portfolio, with a staggering six GABF medals awarded (four of them Gold) since 2006.
This year’s competition was the largest and most competitive yet, with 4,809 beers competing for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. A total of 732 breweries took part in the competition. Congratulations to all of the breweries (especially our fellow PA neighbor breweries) who won medals this year!

This month’s features, simple & pink.

October 24th, 2013

pynk affairDarrell Waltrip is quoted on a recent commercial “I like pink” I thought to myself pink must be the new color of fall.  In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Yard’s brewing of Philadelphia has brewed up the “Anti-Pumpkin Ale” if you will.  No sticky starchy spiced up brown ales here…but a tart, lactic pink hued berry ale named PYNK.  With fruit beers not typically my thing, this sample has been a bystander for a few weeks now… from the first taste I must admit, the combination of sweet/tartness, a little touch of funk from the Lambic yeast strain & the tingle of the carbonation…I like PYNK too!

“Session”…a new word being tossed about in our world these days.  It seems that while most craft beer aficionados are ever searching for the next new crazy, mega IBU, brew with the OG off the charts, with yeast strains cultured from a vessel found in a dark cave in Transylvania that imparts a unique blood-like taste, or  mythical hop bines that climb to the clouds that a giant once tried to come down, and…
Well you get the idea everyone wants a niche & their piece of pie.  In all of this sometimes having a few pints leaves you a fried palate, a full belly and sometime about half gooned up.   In contrast to the biggest, baddest, mother of a malt bomb, look to these for around 4.5-5% alcohol, generally a bit lighter in body then most typical craft offerings yet they strive to find a good balance between drinkability & flavor.   In a nutshell: the plan is to keep it simple, a little less malt is used to keep the Gravity, or amount of dissolved sugars, a little lower & use a grain bill that is fairly fermentable, as well as  keeping the bitterness levels down a notch or two in order retain style balance.  In this concept, a new pale ale has surfaced from one of my favorite brewers, Terrapin of Athens, GA.  Recreation obviously is rooted in Chico, as its flavor profile tastes like a lighter, slightly cleaner Sierra Nevada Pale Ale- so whats not to like right?   This simple, easy drinkin’ canned (i love cans!:) ale has become an every day kinda favorite as it still is respectably hoppy, but clocks in at just 4.7% ABV & is ready for a mountain trip!
Another favorite is Founders All Day IPA, just a little drier, brighter & more citrucy than Recreation, its really a great little IPA.
Then Alan Newman, the wacky cat that founded Magic Hat, has founded a new project called The Just Beer Project, after being confounded by the vast array of craziness previously mentioned.  Just Beer IPA is simple & easy- theres nothing not like about this one either.  West coats roots give it a familiar backbone & a nice citric bite comes through in the finish- its simple, but thats the point.  Lets get back to just enjoying good beer.
While on the topic of good, simple beer, we can also look to our old stand-by styles.  Every once in a while it seems a reset switch is needed to re-boot the old taste buds, Stoudts’ fantastic Pilsner or a Spaten is called into action.  Yard’s beers tend to be rather session-able by design as well, as their Philly Pale is very lightly bittered but is dry hopped to still impart a fair amount  of character to this bright, easy drinking brew. Whether a pale lager like Carlsberg or an English brown ale like Newcastle, or how about a Belgian witbier, like Hoegarrden- any one of these could be just the ticket…of course they’ve been lighter bodied “session beers” for many decades now.  It seems there’s really nothing “new” in beer, just reinvented.

Victory update…

August 30th, 2013

Victory is Brewing…Delicious Additions to Fall Lineup give you Three Reasons to Welcome the End of Summer
We recently announced several additions to our lineup of packaged beers hitting the market this fall, including a new year-round offering, DirtWolfTM Double IPA, and holiday seasonal ale, Winter CheersTM. We also will return an old fan favorite to the market, Old Horizontal®, after a hiatus in 2012 and 2011.

Fall Goodness…Terrapin Pumpkinfest

August 22nd, 2013

The fall offering from Terrapin Brewing in Athens, GA is a perfectly balanced Pumpkin lager.  Yes, Lager…starting life as an authentic rendition of a German Fest Beer or Marzen, real pumpkin and spices are added without overwhelming the beer.  I think the real idea of balance is for the major flavor contributors of a beer to be complemented by the other spices & additives, if any exist.  In that regard Terrapin has nailed this one.  You can expect a pumpkin pie nose followed by a strong malt backbone, low hop bitterness and authentic fall taste.  Heres the specs:

Malts: Munich, Vienna, Munich II, Caramunich II, Melanoiden
Hops: Vanguard, Hallertau Hersbrucker
Other: Cinnamon, Ginger, Allspice, Cloves, Pumpkin!!

ABV: 6.1%
IBU: 23
OG: 14.5

‘Tis the Summer Season
The Fourth of July is just days away. Do you know what you’ll be drinking when the fireworks start lighting up the evening sky? Celebrate your independence and the commencement of summer with a pair of our GABF gold medal-winning beers: our year-round DreamWeaver Wheat and current seasonal Sunshine Pils. Experience an unfiltered blast of spicy, mouthwatering joy with our dreamiest creation, DreamWeaver Wheat. Our interpretation of a classic German-style Hefeweizen features a pleasant banana note that complements the pepper and clove character, resulting in a refreshing beer that pairs well with light fare such as salads and seafood. For those seeking something a bit more on the hoppy side, our Sunshine Pils has summer written all over it! Crisp and light-bodied but with a kicked-up hop character, Sunshine Pils is the perfect all-day beer to combat the sweltering heat of the season. Whichever you choose, both will treat you nicely all summer long!

Nugget Nectar Draft Release

Learn More

With bottle production in full swing, we’re now gearing up for phase two of our Nugget Nectar release. You can expect Nugget to hit draft lines in mid-February (around Valentine’s Day) throughout our eight-state distribution area and continue into early March. “We’re excited by the amount of positive customer feedback we’ve gotten about Nugget Nectar this year,” said John Trogner. With increased production in 2013, expect to find Nugget Nectar flowing in your favorite local drinking establishment. Also, we will package 22oz. bomber bottles during the first week of February, so you can anticipate the release date to coincide with the draft version. To locate Nugget Nectar and other Tröegs beers in your neck of the woods, check out our Brew Finder.

Scratch Beer Update

Learn More

Scratch #87 – Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator – It’s been quite some time since our last barrel-aged release. Well, we were so excited about this bourbon barrel-aged version of our flagship year-round Double Bock, Troegenator, that instead of bottling it, we decided to make it available exclusively in our Tasting Room! Everything you love about Troegenator is present – the strong malt aroma, rich chewy body, and warm, tingly spiciness. With that said, it was time well-spent in the bourbon barrel for this already dense, delicious treat. The Nator returns after more than five months from its holiday inside Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. The result is a lush Double Bock with undertones of vanilla, oak, toasted coconut, and tangy bourbon warmth. Released on 1/30/13. Availability: Tasting room draft only. This is an extremely limited batch. Sorry, no growler fills.

Scratch #88 – Cocoa Stout – Slated for a Valentine’s Day release, we have an ambitious Cocoa Stout in the works. Stop by our Tasting Room with your special Valentine and give them a rich, chocolatey memory they’re sure to cherish for years to come! Read more about our upcoming Cocoa Stout below. Availability: TBD.

The Infüz-O-Matic 5000

From the mind of John Trogner, we are pleased to present an apparatus that will change the landscape of our Scratch Beer series forever… the Infüz-O-Matic 5000.

This prototype was constructed to extract the essence of a variety of ingredients and infuse the bold flavors directly into our beer. Click here for a photo collage of our brewing team adding special ingredients to our upcoming Cocoa Stout Scratch beer release. For this particular batch, we added 4lbs. of cocoa nibs and 2lbs. of cocoa powder per barrel, plus thirty vanilla beans and copious amounts of Cascade hops directly to beer via the Infüz-O-Matic 5000. The Cocoa Stout will be available in the Tasting Room in mid-February around Valentine’s Day. Come taste for yourself and savor the flavor!

Full Moon Firkin

With the huge crowd that converged in our Tasting Room for last month’s Full Moon Firkin event, we’ve decided to give it another go and feature Nugget Nectar vs. Perpetual IPA: The Sequel (or Part Deux, depending on your preference). On Monday, February 25, we will feature dueling firkins of two of our hoppiest and most revered beers, each dry-hopped and doused with special ingredients. Sometimes referred to as the “Storm Moon,” we’re hoping to be adequately prepared for the storm of hopheads sure to flock to this event! Tapping time TBD.

Hop Freaks!

January 31st, 2013

Wow not even Feb yet & already over half way through Hop Freak season.  Now is revered as the time of year when all of the good stuff hits the shelves.  HopSlam!, Nugget Nectar & Founders Double Trouble, all three so anticipated its like there’s copious doses of gasoline involved with their launch every year.   Were hoping for a second small shipment of Nectar after the draft rolls in (any day now) and HopSlam was pretty much all done before it even showed up- gotta get on the list early, as some “ahead of the curve” were too late to get any of the mothers of all hop bombs (at a fair price) this year.  Keep an eye out for Double T (any time now), as it could bode as the best of the bunch, as it has in a few of the past years’ & don’t forget about Fegley’s Hopsolutely, with is every bit as good, and much more than most big IPA’s out there… were talkin’ 11.5 ABV & 100+ IBU’s & available for the most part, year ’round…

2013 Hop Slam Update

January 18th, 2013

Hop Slam should be leaving Michigan bound for PA the week of the 21st.  It should be on hand here the afternoon of the 29th.  Its still a mystery how much will be allocated to PA from Bell’s, but the word is that it will definitely be less than hoped for, despite more of it produced then ever before.  There is just a crazy demand for this & other limited run extreme beers across the country…(Lets face its not like its our ‘lil secret, and there are limits to how much beer can be made)  So if you haven’t called, e-mailed, or messaged through Facebook, yet be sure to ASAP.  This one really wont hang around long!
